Aaron Bernakevitch is an award-winning Director of Photography based in Calgary, Alberta, with over 15 years of experience in the film industry. From commercials to documentaries, music videos to dramatic features, Aaron has had the pleasure of working on projects across Canada, the USA, Spain, China, Taiwan, El Salvador, Australia and the Netherlands.
For Aaron, successful filmmaking is all about collaboration. He believes that the best results come from truly listening and working together with collaborators to bring a shared vision to life. His technical skills are complemented by his natural ability to connect with others and adapt to each unique project. Whether he's behind a 16mm/35mm film camera, a digital cinema camera, or anything in between, Aaron’s focus is always on creating something authentic and impactful.
Aaron’s talent has been recognized with multiple accolades, including Best Cinematographer for the documentaries Echo of Everything (2023) and True West: The John Scott Story (2021). He’s also won Best Cinematographer-Drama for Dear Kate (2017) and Hello World (2015) all from the Alberta Media Production Industries Association (AMPIA), as well as back-to-back AMPIA awards for Best Music Video with Petunia’s “Mercy” (2016) and Hello Moth’s “A Song About Transience” (2017). His work on Three Colors and Canvas earned him Best Cinematography (2012) – Feature Film at the Mumbai International Women’s Film Festival, while Consolation Prize won Best Cinematography (2013) – Short Film at the Red Dirt International Film Festival.
Outside of filmmaking, Aaron is an avid outdoor enthusiast. When he’s not busy on set, you can find him snowboarding, hitting a high scored game of golf course, playing chess, swimming or simply enjoying the outdoors with his family.
